Should you simply share or add your thoughts?

You want to share an insightful LinkedIn post - maybe it’s an industry update, a thought-provoking perspective, or a company announcement. But, before you hit repost, should you share it or add your own thoughts?

Here are some surprising things to consider before making that decision.

Direct repost vs. repost with thoughts

Direct repost (without thoughts)

A direct repost simply shares the original post with your audience without adding commentary.

  • Boosts the original post by increasing its visibility

  • Doesn’t impact your LinkedIn stats - the engagement stays with the original post

  • Quick and easy, requiring no additional content

However, it doesn’t add your perspective, and a simple repost often gets limited engagement.

Direct reposts help the original author but don’t contribute to your own LinkedIn analytics.

Repost with thoughts (adding commentary)

A repost with thoughts creates a new post featuring your commentary alongside the original content.

  • Adds your perspective and provides additional insights

  • Counts as one of your own posts and contributes to your LinkedIn stats

  • Encourages engagement from your audience

This approach also has some unintended consequences. It splits engagement - meaning the original author won’t get credit for interactions on your post. Additionally, it affects your own posting frequency. If you post another update within four hours, LinkedIn may limit its reach.

Reposting with thoughts creates a separate post, meaning it competes with your other content for visibility.

Other ways to share content

If you want to amplify a post without affecting your own stats, consider these alternatives:

Direct sharing via messages

Instead of reposting, send the post directly to relevant connections via LinkedIn messages.

  • Keeps engagement on the original post

  • Allows for personalized sharing

  • Doesn’t impact your posting frequency

Commenting on the original post

Rather than reposting, leave a thoughtful comment on the original post.

  • Boosts the original post’s visibility

  • Engages with the author directly

  • Shows your expertise without competing for reach

Comments help the original post gain traction while still showcasing your insights.
