Keep your channels running while you take a break

The holiday season is here: a time to slow down, recharge, and spend time with the people who matter most. But stepping back doesn’t mean your social media presence has to fall silent. With a little planning, you can keep things running smoothly and enjoy a well‑deserved break.

Here are four simple ways to stay visible without staying online.

1. Schedule your social posts ahead of time

Planning content in advance is one of the easiest ways to maintain consistency during the holidays. You don’t need expensive tools, several free options work perfectly well:

  • Canva (free plan): Canva’s Content Planner does allow scheduling on the free plan, but only to a limited number of platforms. It’s ideal for simple, lightweight scheduling.

  • Adobe Express (free plan): Includes a social media scheduler that supports multiple platforms and is genuinely free.

  • LinkedIn (Free): LinkedIn’s native scheduler lets you pre‑schedule posts directly on the platform at no cost. It works for both personal profiles and company pages and is ideal for planning holiday content in advance.

  • Meta’s Built‑In Planner (free): If you’re posting to Facebook or Instagram, Meta Business Suite offers free scheduling with no limits.

When scheduling, consider a mix of seasonal content:

  • Warm holiday messages

  • Year‑end reflections

  • Light, engaging posts (polls, questions, fun facts)

  • Any promotions or offers you want to highlight

Important: If you schedule posts in advance, keep an eye on the news. Unexpected events can make pre‑planned content feel tone‑deaf. A quick check-in every few days helps you avoid awkward timing.

2. Automate light engagement (but don't overdo it)

If you expect customer questions or DMs over the holidays, simple automation can help:

  • Use built‑in auto‑replies on Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn

  • Set up FAQ responses for common queries

  • Add a friendly “We’re taking a short break” message to set expectations

You don’t need a full chatbot, even basic automated replies can keep things moving while you’re offline.

3. Curate and share user-generated content

User‑generated content (UGC) is a low‑effort, high‑impact way to stay active:

  • Encourage followers to share their holiday moments using a branded hashtag

  • Repost customer photos, testimonials, or stories

  • Highlight community traditions or celebrations

UGC keeps your feed authentic and engaging without requiring you to create everything from scratch.

4. Or, take a break entirely (yes, really)

This is the part most people forget:

It’s completely okay to step away from social media for the holidays

Your audience is also slowing down. Engagement naturally dips this time of year. If you want to pause posting and return refreshed in January, that’s a perfectly valid strategy.

A simple pinned post or story saying “We’re taking a short break and will be back in the New Year” is more than enough.

Sometimes the best strategy is rest.

Happy holidays!!

Whether you choose to schedule content, automate lightly, share UGC, or take a full break, the goal is the same: protect your time, protect your energy, and enter the New Year feeling recharged.

The holidays are for connection, reflection, and rest, and your social media can support that, not compete with it.
